Dr. Bruce E. Brown

Thanks for visiting the city web page and your interest in our city manager/council form of governance.  I have had the privilege of serving on city council since May of 2002.  During my tenure on council I served as council's liaison on several boards and commissions including parks and recreation, New River Valley Community Services Board, Virginia's First Regional Industrial Facility Authority, New River Valley Commerce Park Participation Committee.  I have also served as Vice Mayor during my time on council.

I grew up in Front Royal, Virginia the son of Stewart and Babs Brown.  I have a sister who is an Assistant Principal with the Culpeper School system.  I have lived in the New River Valley since fall of 1969 when I entered the Freshman Class at Virginia Tech.  Upon graduation in 1973 with a management major and marketing minor, I began my career with FMCCorporation in Radford.  I served as Industrial Relations Manager with primary responsibility for Employee Training, Safety, and Loss Prevention at this manufacturing facility.

I continued my education at Radford University while employed at FMC and completed a Masters degree at Radford University with a concentration in Personnel Administration and a minor in Community College Education.  I subsequently left the employ of FMC and pursued a career in higher education with New River Community College where I served as a Professor of Business Management.  I have also taught at Radford University, Bluefield College and recently at Virginia Tech or a part time/adjunct basis.  I feel very blessed to have been able to work in education for the past 30 years.  While employed at New River I completed my doctorate in Higher Education Administration with a cognate in Business Management.

I recently accepted a position at Wytheville Community College in administration.  I serve as Dean of General Education and Business.  In that capacity I lead a division comprised of 19 full time teaching faculty and am partnered with them to deliver instruction in our University Parallel/Transfer programs and several career and technical education programs.  As a member of the senior leadership team at the college, we develop strategies that support the teaching and learning environment to meet the educational, professional, and personal goals of the students we serve throughout the service region of Wythe, Bland, Carroll, Grayson, Smyth counties, and the town of Galax.
I am married to the former Cary Goode who was my high school sweetheart.  We were blessed with the birth of our daughter, Tiffany Anne Brown in 1988.  She is a graduate of Radford High School and will begin her sophomore year at Hollins University as a member of the class of 2010.  In my spare time I enjoy playing golf with my extended family of friends in the NRV.  I take pleasure in working on landscaping projects at my home particularly my aquascape and herb gardens.  You can find me most weekends in the fall at Hokie football games or hoping for the glory days of the Redskins.  I have enjoyed my service on council and hope this biographical profile gives you a brief glimpse of me.
