City/University Joint Advisory Commission On Public Affairs

A Council Resolution formed this group in 1995. The membership is designed to
reflect various constituencies in the community. The City has six members and
Radford University also appoints six members to serve on the board. The group
discusses issues of mutual concern and coordinates efforts to respond to
opportunities that will benefit the City and the University.

Library Board

Established by the City code of ordinances Sec. 2-365. The library board
advises the City concerning the public libraries, reading rooms, branches and
substations. A professional Library Director is hired and supervised by the City
Manager. The Radford Library is supported by the Lamplighters, a local non
profit groups that provides volunteers and fund-raising support for the library.

Planning Commission

Established by the City code of ordinances Sec. 2-211. The planning
commission shall have the power to make recommendations concerning any matter
referred to it by the city council, and any such recommendation made by the
planning commission shall be considered by the city council prior to final
action.
Makes recommendations on the city’s comprehensive plan, subdivision ordinance,
zoning laws and site plan review.
The Commission meets on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the
Municipal Building.

Recreation/Parks/Playgrounds Commission

The recreation, parks and playgrounds commission may conduct any form of
recreation or cultural activity that will employ the leisure time of the people
in a constructive and wholesome manner. The recreation, parks and playgrounds
commission shall provide, conduct and supervise public parks and playgrounds,
athletic fields, recreation centers and other recreational facilities and
activities on any of the properties owned or controlled by the city, or on other
properties with the consent of the owners.
The Recreation Commission advises City staff and City Council concerning
operation of various programs and facilities. The City Manager hires and
supervises a professional Recreation Director who manages the recreation
department staff. The Commission helps operate a new recreation center, Bissett
Park (a large park along the river), wildwood park (a nature preserve in the
center of the City) and a number of other smaller parks and athletic facilities.
