City of Radford Fire Chief Lee Simpkins
Lee Simpkins began his career with the City of Radford Fire Department in April of 1970 as a volunteer. He was appointed as Assistant Fire Chief on Student Government Day at Radford High School and was bitten by the firefighting bug.
Lee’s professional career with the City of Radford started on September 15, 1974 when he was hired by Chief Calvin Whitt as a paid firefighter. Lee is a state certified instructor with the Virginia Department of Fire Programs and has taught countless members of the fire service throughout the state of Virginia.
Lee was promoted to Captain under Volunteer Chief Martin Roberts. Upon the retirement of Chief Roberts, Lee was appointed Fire Chief by City Manager Robert Asbury in September of 1999.
Chief Simpkins is married to wife Beverly with 2 children, Ramie and Ryan. Lee was born and raised in Radford and currently lives in the city. “I love this city and helping people and still enjoy coming to work every day” Simpkins says. “I have no plans to retire as long as the City Manager is pleased with my work,”
If you have ever been in Chief Simpkins office you will know that he is an avid collector of anything to do with the fire service.
