radford vaThe Records Bureau of the Radford City Department of Police is maintained by the Records Manager.  Sonia Ramsey has been with the Department since May 2001.  She has been a lifelong resident of Radford, except for her college years where she graduated from Virginia Intermont College.  Sonia began her service to the Department as a Communications Officer, then an Office Assistant, and has held the position of Records Manager since April 2005.

The Records Bureau is responsible for maintaining all records held within the Department.  This includes case files, accident reports, arrest records, fingerprint cards, along with all the other documentation necessary for law enforcement.  All records are kept for a period of time as set forth by the General Schedule of Virginia and then destroyed according to law.  The schedule can be found at the Library of Virginia's website, http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwedo/records/sched_local/index.htm

All Virginia Freedom of Information Act requests are answered by the Records Bureau.  These include accident reports, reports related to acts of crime (such as assaults, larcenies, vandalisms, etc.), and background checks.  Radford Department of Police follows the laws set forth by the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, which can be viewed at the website http://dls.state.va.us/foiacouncil.htm .  To request a report pertaining to a crime or an accident report, please print off this form and mail it to or bring it into the Department:

Criminal background checks can be completed by the Records Bureau.  These are for a record of Radford City Department of Police arrests only.  An official criminal history must be obtained from the Virginia State Police.  Information on the cost and how to obtain a criminal history can be found at http://www.vsp.state.va.us/cjis_chrc.htm .  To obtain a criminal record from the Radford City Department of Police, you must come to the Department and bring two forms of identification, one of which must be a photo ID.  The only other person allowed to get a copy of your information would be your legal council and then your record would only be released when a notarized, signed consent form is given to us by your attorney.  The following form may be downloaded and filled out prior to coming to the Department (remember it must be notarized):

The Records Bureau is available to assist citizens during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  Telephone requests for copies of accident reports or other insurance reports can be made by calling the Records Manager at (540) 731-5532.  Please be advised that a charge may apply for the report and a photo ID may be required to obtain the report.
