Animal Control

The Radford Department of Police Animal Control Bureau is dedicated to the service of domestic animal in the City of Radford.  The Bureau, consisting of one full time and one part-time officer, answers close to 1,000 calls for service each year regarding animals within the city limits.  We also impound animals to be adopted out or retrieved by the owner.   The Bureau works closely with Radford Pound Pals to find homes for all the animals that need caring for.  Pound Pals assists with the adoption process and also helps care for animals by feeding and fostering the overflow that the Bureau cannot adequately care for.  Adoptions are generally handled at the Animal Control shelter on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., but may also be done from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the shelter's normal business hours.  For more information on Pound Pals, please visit www.radfordpoundpals.org .

The Animal Control Bureau shelter undertook a major remodeling in 2005.  The dog runs were expanded, the recreation area for the animals was enlarged at the back of the pound, and an exercise lot was added to the south side of the pound.   These renovations allowed a more efficient and more pet-friendly area for the animals awaiting a new home. The Radford Department of Police is anticipating additional remodeling in 2006 to include painting, blocking and concrete work, and other cosmetic jobs.

Questions or comments are always welcomed and complaints about animals can be made to the Animal Control Bureau during normal business hours at (540)731-3688 or after hours to the Communications Center at (540)731-3624.
