Criminal Investigations Bureau

The Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Radford Department of Police is a specialized bureau of the department to investigate serious and/or complicated cases.  The Bureau consists of a Sergeant and three (3) detectives.  Each detective works several cases at a time and investigations continue until the crime is either solved or is determined unsolvable due to lack of evidence.  All means of investigative techniques are exhausted before a case is determined to be unsolvable.  The majority of the cases investigated by the Investigation Bureau includes, but is not limited to:  counterfeited/forged checks, sexual assaults, credit card theft, burglaries, auto theft and any other crime that is turned over by the Patrol Division for further investigation.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau is headed by Detective Sergeant R.A. Wilburn. He is a nine year veteran of law enforcement with the last four being in criminal investigations. Sergeant Wilburn has specialized training in homicide investigation, bloodstain pattern analysis, internet crimes against children, rape and sexual assault investigation and is a graduate of the Virginia Forensic Science Academy.  Each of the other Detectives receives specialized training in various investigative techniques and procedures.

One of the greatest tools used by the bureau is a specialized Crime Scene Unit Mobile Van.  It is a box style ambulance that has been customized to include basic and specialized crime scene documentation and collection equipment. The van responds to major crimes where physical evidence must be preserved and collected. The van has been utilized on numerous occasions. Each member of the Bureau has been trained in the utilization of the van and the investigative tools contained within it.
