Hiring & Employment

 

The Radford Department of Police strives to hire the most qualified persons for the position of Police Officer.  Below is an outline of the minimum hiring requirements for police officers.  It is our intent to insure that all elements of the selection process are administered, scored, evaluated, and interpreted in a fair and uniform manner. Applications will be taken as jobs are announced.  Open jobs will be advertised on the city's website www.radford.va.us.

 

PROCEDURES:

 

A.        The minimum qualifications that all candidates for the position of police officer must meet are:

1.  Minimum age of 21;

2.  Uncorrected vision of 20/40 or better in each eye, or correctable to 20/20;

3.  High school graduate or equivalent;

4.  Must pass a physical agility test;      

5.  Must pass a written test as determined by the Department of Police;

6.  Must pass an oral review board as administered by the Department of Police;

7.  Must be qualified as determined by a background investigation to include credit history, school records, neighborhood canvasses, health, and character and criminal/drivers records as may be  determined by the investigating officials; 

8.  Must pass a medical examination conducted by a   physician as directed by the City of Radford;

9.  Must meet any other standards set by law, (15.2- 1706, 9.1-101 Code of Virginia), or by policy of the Criminal Justice Services Board.

10.Must pass an interview with the Chief of Police.

11.Must sign a Conditional Offer of Probationary Employment contract and a Pre-Employment Agreement contract with the Radford Department of Police.  Certified officers hired by the Department are exempted from the fee for previously completed Basic Training on the Pre-Employment Agreement.

 

B.        The applicant must perform the following:

1.  Complete a written application and submit it to the Virginia Employment Commission;

2.  Complete the Police supplemental application and liability waivers and have them witnessed;

3.  Appear at the times specified for all testing and interviews;

4.  Submit to a physical and drug screen as specified by the City of Radford.
