School Resource Officer

The School Resource Officer for the City of Radford is Master Officer J.W. Hendricks.  MPO Hendricks is a 21 year veteran of the Radford Department of Police.  He has worked in the field for most of these years and served the School System for the past two years.

The School Resource Officer is responsible for elementary schools, Dalton Middle School, and Radford High School.  He tries to check in on the elementary schools at least once per week and walks the hall of the middle school and high school daily.  Of course, when he is needed at the elementary schools, his response time is very rapid.

Officer Hendricks is responsible for teaching the D.A.R.E. program to sixth graders at Belle Heth Elementary School.  This program is an anti-drug awareness program that is taught to all students in the sixth grade.  At the end of the program, the students receive a certificate of completion.  In addition to anti-drug awareness, other topics in the program include anti-bullying and cultural diversity.

Officer Hendricks takes crime reports associated with the schools.  These most often include vandalisms, larcenies, and assaults.  He assists the principals with problems associated with the children who attend the schools such as truancy, behavioral issues, and often is available when a child just needs to talk to someone.

Seventh graders of Dalton Intermediate School participate in the Class Action Program.  This is led by the School Resource Officer and pertains to various laws that are of particular interest to a young teenager.  In addition to just teaching the laws to the students, the SRO explains what their responsibility is and that of the child's parent if the child breaks those laws.  This is a pro-active program in which Officer Hendricks tries to discourage students from criminal actions.
